It is no secret that many artists love to remake/reimagine famous characters, movies, and TV shows. We have seen reimagined Disney characters, Harry Potter, and many others. Many artists modernize them and illustrate them in all sorts of situations.
However, artist Tyron Handy decided to join in by doing something unique.
He took the characters we all know and love such as scooby doo, and changed their skin colour. Tyron said that he never felt represented in cartoons. His main goal with this project was to raise awareness of how people felt like they were not represented correctly in cartoons and TV shows.

The artist says he was faced with all sorts of reactions but many people said that they are happy someone is addressing these issues and supporting Tyron and saying that kids would benefit from seeing themselves represented in the media, in a better way.
Many people are even asking Tyron to do his animated series.

In a conversation with Bored Panda, Tyron said that he got inspired after he rarely saw any bl-ack characters play the main role, and he started reimagining some of his favourite cartoon characters like the bl-ack versions of themselves.

He said, ‘My goal is to create my original characters and cartoon series and hopefully inspire more bl-ack artists to create their own. My comic series Apple Dapple Tactics was created out of boredom. I never really planned to do much with it, but after the first skit went viral on Twitter, I delivered.

Currently, I’m working on making longer skits that feel more like mini episodes and posting them on my IGTV and YouTube page. I hope to get my series one day on a streaming platform like HBOMax, Hulu, or Netflix. It’s always been my dream to see my characters come to life on the screen.”

Tryon says the goal was primarily to inspire people and see what their reactions were. He says he has been drawing for as long as he can remember. As a kid, Tyron used to spend all his day drawing his favourite cartoon characters because art was his escape. He is a self-taught artist.

Although he says that today Bl-ack people get more represented than they used to be, he hopes they continue to make better ones.

He also says that the support from people is what keeps him going. He was initially not sure about posting anything on social media but after receiving positive responses he is now excited to share more with his followers.

Tyron even went on to give his advice to all the budding artists out there and said, “I would say don’t be afraid to learn from others. Focus on finding your style and perfecting it, and always have fun creating.”
