One doesn’t have to necessarily give birth to become a parent, and nobody knows it better than Daniel Donaldson. Daniel worked as a youth sports coach in Haleyville, Alabama, where he came across many kids. He even mentored many, and the kids loved him. But there was this one girl that caught his attention and with whom he shared a special bond.
Her name was Alecia.
Fourteen years old Alecia got close to Daniel just a year after they met. Very close that when Daniel found out Alecia’s parents had put her in foster care, he decided to take her in as one of his kids. Daniel’s family open heartedly welcomed Alecia and wanted to adopt her and make her an official member of their family. They were hoping she would agree to the adoption but never forced her into it.
The family let her know that if and whenever she wanted to join them, all she had to do was let them know, and everything else would be taken care of. Daniel’s birthday was just a few months away, and Alecia approached his wife Tiffany and asked her if they could start with the adoption process and give him a surprise on his birthday. Tiffany happily agreed, and from then on she, along with Alecia and her three kids, began to plan ways in which they could reveal the surprise to Daniel.
Finally, on his birthday, they blindfolded Daniel, and he was holding up posters explaining what was to happen. The poster read – ” This man here started as just my coach, but he stepped up when he didn’t have to.” One of the signs read, “He is now not only my coach. My encourager, my protector, my provider, but now the man I call daddy.”
Finally, when Daniel opened his blindfold, he could find everyone in his family holding their poster. Alecia’s poster read – ” Will you adopt me?” Alecia had been a part of their family for 524 days, and Daniel loved her, so there was no reason for him to say no. He happily agreed to become her father.
